A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that attaches directly to the jawbone. Over time, a replacement tooth or bridge is securely placed on this root to restore full function and appearance.
However, the success of a dental implant depends on the quality and quantity of the jawbone supporting it. In some cases, bone may be lost due to injury or periodontal disease. As a result, a sinus augmentation may be recommended. This procedure raises the sinus floor and creates space for new bone to form.
Sinus Augmentation Procedure
In most cases, the dentist begins by making a small incision near the upper premolar or molar area to access the jawbone. Next, a small opening is created in the bone.
Then, the sinus membrane is gently lifted upward to create space for bone graft material. After that, the space is filled with grafting material, and the incision is closed.
In addition, the bone used for grafting may come from your own body, from a donor source, or from synthetic materials. Sometimes, synthetic grafts can also help stimulate natural bone growth.
Once the area heals, dental implants can be placed. However, the timing depends on your individual treatment plan and healing process.
Therefore, sinus augmentation plays an important role in increasing the success rate of dental implant procedures by creating a stronger and more stable foundation.
