Many Americans avoid dental visits due to fear from dental anxiety. As a result, they may delay important care. However, sedation dentistry offers a safe and effective way to create a calm, stress-free experience.
In fact, sedation dentistry helps patients feel relaxed and comfortable throughout their visit. Therefore, it is an excellent option for those with dental anxiety.
Does Sedation Dentistry put you to sleep?
Sedation dentistry is often misunderstood. Many people think it puts you to sleep. However, most sedation methods allow you to stay awake during the procedure. Although some medications may cause drowsiness, their main purpose is to reduce anxiety. For example, nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation help you remain calm and relaxed.
In addition, many patients report little to no memory of the procedure. As a result, dental visits feel easier and less stressful. Sedation dentistry is also convenient. In many cases, sedatives can be taken by mouth. Therefore, patients can avoid injections and experience less anxiety.
Furthermore, sedation allows dentists to complete more work in fewer visits. As a result, treatment becomes more efficient for both the patient and the provider. However, safety is always a priority. For this reason, you must arrange for a caregiver to accompany you. In some cases, medication is taken before the appointment, so driving is not recommended.
Advantages of Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry offers several benefits:
- Anxiety is reduced
- Few side effects occur
- More treatment can be completed in one visit
- No needles are required in some cases
- Pain is minimized
- The procedure is safe and controlled
- Visits often feel shorter
What are the 3 types of sedation?
The most common types of dental sedation include nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation.
Each option provides a different level of relaxation. For example, sedation may be mild, moderate, or deep, depending on your needs.
Before treatment, your dentist will review your medical history. In addition, they will consider any medications you are currently taking. As a result, they can recommend the safest and most effective option.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas,” provides mild sedation. It is delivered through a small mask placed over the nose. During the procedure, nitrous oxide helps you feel calm and relaxed. In addition, it may create a sense of well-being. Some patients also notice mild tingling or numbness.
Most importantly, nitrous oxide reduces anxiety and discomfort. Furthermore, it has very few side effects and has been used safely for many years.
Dental IV Sedation
IV sedation provides a deeper level of relaxation. In many cases, patients feel as though they slept through the procedure. Your dentist administers IV sedation directly into the bloodstream. As a result, the effects begin quickly.
After treatment, you may feel drowsy. Therefore, you will need someone to drive you home.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation is a great option for patients who dislike needles. You take medication before your appointment to help you relax. Although you remain awake, the medication dulls your senses. As a result, many patients do not remember the procedure.
In some cases, an additional dose may be given during treatment. This helps maintain a comfortable level of sedation.
What types of drugs are used in oral conscious sedation?
Most medications used in sedation dentistry belong to a group called benzodiazepines. These drugs help reduce anxiety, relax muscles, and promote calmness.
Each medication works differently. For example, some last longer than others. Therefore, your dentist will choose the best option based on the length of your procedure.
Here are some of the most common drugs used in oral conscious sedation:
Valium®
Valium has a long-lasting effect and helps reduce anxiety. In addition, it has amnesic properties. Therefore, it is often used for longer procedures.
Halcion®
Halcion works quickly and has a shorter duration. As a result, it is ideal for shorter treatments.
Ativan®
Ativan reduces anxiety and has a moderate duration. Therefore, it is often used for procedures lasting up to two hours.
Versed®
Versed has a short duration and is used less frequently. However, it works well for very short procedures and helps reduce anxiety.
