Meet Dr. Jesus Gonzalez, DDS, MD, FACS

Diplomate, American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

Dr. Jesus Gonzalez was born in Juarez, Mexico and grew up in El Paso, Texas. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a dental technician for five years. His experiences as a dental assistant drove him to pursue higher education and a career in health care. Dr. Gonzalez graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of North Texas in July 2004.

He then attended dental school through the Navy Health Services Collegiate Program (HSCP) scholarship. In May 2008, he graduated cum laude with research honors from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA), earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. He was also inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society.

In 2009, Dr. Gonzalez completed a one-year residency in Advanced Education in General Dentistry. He was subsequently selected for an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) residency. Dr. Gonzalez began his residency training in OMS in July 2010 attending the UTHSCSA training under world-renowned OMS surgeons Dr. Edward Ellis III and Dr. Daniel Perez. He graduated from medical school in May of 2013, earning his Medical Doctor degree and, in July of 2014 completed a one-year internship in general surgery and general anesthesia.

Dr. Gonzalez completed his training in OMS in 2016 and was assigned to Okinawa, Japan. While in Okinawa, he served as dental battalion surgeon, credentials chair, and department head of the OMS department. He also attained diplomate status from the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) in 2018. Subsequently, he served aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) and provided surgical coverage aboard the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77). When in port, he taught and supervised residents at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth OMS residency program.

After completing his ship assignment, Dr. Gonzalez was assigned to the "President's Hospital," Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, MD. He was selected to serve as Deputy Director for Dentistry, Medical Readiness, and as Associate Program Director for the OMS program, where he trained elite maxillofacial surgeons in the largest tri-service residency program in the Department of Defense.

After serving as Deputy Director, he was selected as the Department Chair of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He oversaw all aspects of the OMS department, which provides surgical care for over 250,000 beneficiaries in the National Capital Region. As a testament to his devotion to surgery, academia, and ethical standards, he attained Fellowship in the American College of Surgeons (FACS) in 2023.

Dr. Gonzalez retired from the U.S. Navy as a Commander after over 26 years of honorable service, with his career culminating in training residents and serving as the Chair of OMS at WRNMMC. He is a Diplomate and Committee Examiner for the ABOMS, playing a vital role in ensuring professional competency and directly supporting the training and assessment of future oral and maxillofacial surgeons around the nation. His special interests include trauma surgery, TMJ surgery, reconstruction, orthognathic surgery, dental implants, and dentoalveolar surgery.

Dr. Gonzalez is happily married to his wife Amy, and spends his free time with his three children, Selena, Malachi, and Skyler.
